LOWER BACK PAIN
Back pain will affect four out of five people in the UK at some time in their lives. During any one year, up to half of the adult population (15-49%) will be suffering from a bout of back pain. The condition increases with advancing age, starting in school children and peaking in adults of 35 to 55 years of age (Department for Work and Pensions, 2002).
Back pain origins as a musculo-skeletal symptom that often leads onto referred conditions such as pain felt in the organs. Unbeknown to many, intra-abdominal disorders – such as appendicitis, aneurysms, kidney diseases, bladder infections, pelvic infections and ovarian disorders, among others – can cause pain referred to the back.
Associated back pain symptoms often include nerve and muscular problems (strains), degenerative disc disease, and arthritis. The most common site of back pain is typically within the lower back between the 12th rib and the iliac crest. This is often caused by poor posture, twisting awkwardly, or incorrect lifting techniques.
